Ms. Starwood, author of the recently released Long Island Wine Country: Award-Winning Vineyards of the North Fork and the Hamptons, with photography by Bruce Curtis, began writing features for Long Island Wine Press magazine in 1997 and became the magazine's editor in 2006, subsequently retiring in 2011. The first issue completely under her editorial direction won first place in its division in the New York Press Association's annual competition.
The prestigious Wine & Spirit Education Trust, through the International Wine Center in New York City, recently awarded Ms. Starwood the Intermediate Certificate in Wines & Spirits, with merit. She holds a cocktail certificate from the New York Bartending School in Manhattan and is working on a book about cocktails with photographer Bruce Curtis.
Ms. Starwood has written and edited numerous features on Long Island's wines, wineries, winemakers and vineyard owners. Her subjects have included pouring, storing and blending wine; interviews with such wine country personalities as founding vintner Louisa Hargrave, vineyard manager Matt Gillies, winemaker Adam Suprenant and tasting room manager Bill Thompson; and retrospective looks at the Long Island wine industry at its 25th and 35th anniversaries.
As a photographer, Ms. Starwood has taken numerous photographs for the Long Island Wine Press and other publications of Times/Review Newspapers, based in Mattituck, Long Island. Some of her photographs appear in Long Island Wine Country.
Ms. Starwood lives on the North Fork, in the heart of Long Island Wine Country. She is a member of the New York Press Association and The Authors Guild. Inquiries may be directed to the author at jane@janestarwood.com.
